Eli's Corrupt Sons and Samuel's Childhood

1 Samuel 2:12-26

Chapter 2
12 And the sons of Eli, sons of Belial, did not know the LORD. 13 And the custom of the priests with the people: every man who was sacrificing a sacrifice, the priest's young man came while he was cooking the flesh, with the three-tined fork in his hand. 14 And he would strike it into the pan, or kettle, or cauldron, or pot—whatever the fork brought up, the priest would take for himself. In this way they treated all the Israelites who came there to Shiloh. 15 Also, before they burned the fat portions, the priest's boy would come and say to the man of the sacrifice, "Give flesh to roast for the priest," for he would not take boiled flesh from you, but only raw flesh. 16 And the man said to him, "They will burn the offering as on the day of the fatness, and take for yourself as your soul desires." And he said, "No, for now you will give it, and if not, I will take it by force." 17 And the sin offering of the young men was very great before the LORD, for the men despised the offering of the LORD. 18 And Samuel served before the LORD, a boy girded with a linen ephod. 19 And his mother would make a small me'il for him, and she would bring it to him from time to time each year when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. 20 And Israel blessed Elkanah and his wife and said, "May the LORD establish for you offspring from this woman in place of the request which he asked for the LORD." And they went to their place. 21 For the LORD visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew up with the LORD. 22 And Eli was very old, and he heard all that his sons were doing to all Israel and that they were lying with the women of the tent of meeting at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 23 And he said to them, "Why do you do these things which I have heard—your evil words from all the people?" 24 No, my sons, for it is not a good report that I hear the people of the LORD spreading. 25 If a man sins against a man, God will intercede; but if a man sins against the LORD, who will intercede for him? And they did not listen to the voice of their father, for the LORD desired to put them to death. 26 And the boy Samuel continued to grow, and he was in favor both with the LORD and with people.
